Former Columbus Mayor Passes Away at Age 78

October 30th, 2008

Thomas Moody, former Mayor of the City of Columbus and member of the 1947 graduating class of South High School, has passed away at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus from natural causes. He was 78 years old.

Tom was born on November 26th, 1929, and grew up on the South Side of Columbus during the great depression. After attending South High School, Moody would attend The Ohio State University, where he graduated with honors. From there, he would proceed to Franklin University, where he would later earn his law degree.

After 7 years of practicing law and 2 years on the Columbus City Council, Tom was elected to serve as a judge on the Franklin County Municipal Court in 1963. In 1968, Moody was elected to serve on the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. He'd spend only three years there, leaving in 1971 to run for Mayor.

In the 1972 Columbus Mayoral Election, Republican Thomas Moody was elected the 44th Mayor of the City of Columbus, narrowly defeating incumbent Maynard E. "Jack" Sensenbrenner by a margin of less than 2,000 votes. Tom won election on the strength of a campaign in which he assured the people of the city he'd be "quietly effective" as the city's highest ranking municipal officer. Whether quietly or not, effective he was. Under his watch, Columbus underwent one of the largest growth periods in the city's history. This included the construction of One and Two Nationwide Plaza, the Huntington Center, and the AEP Building. Moody began planning for Interstate 670 as well as State Route 315, which he negotiated to secure the land for, greatly contributing to the growth of the northern part of Columbus. Tom also oversaw the completion of Interstate 270, and the trash burning power plant. His time as mayor saw the growth of COSI and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, as well as the planning stages for Columbus City Center.

Thomas Moody's Mayoral tenure ended in 1984 with the election of fellow Republican Dana G. "Buck" Rinehart. Tom is a Mayor who will be missed by his city, and an alumnus that we can all be proud of. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
